Why Founders Miss High-Value Conversations on X and LinkedIn

Many founders treat engagement like a lottery. Publish a post, hope someone replies, hope that person is in your target market. Meanwhile, plenty of conversations happen every day among exactly the people you want to reach. You see a small fraction of them, and the ones you see are rarely the ones most worth your time.

Why founders miss the right conversations

Two things get in the way. The first is attention: your feed is arranged by the platform, not by where you could be most useful. The second is habit: it is more comfortable to spend an hour writing a post than to spend a few minutes joining someone else's discussion, even though the second can matter more.

The result is that founders put their best effort into posts and their leftover effort into conversations, which is the wrong way round for building relationships.

Two questions to ask about any conversation

    Before replying, ask two things.

Is this conversation active? A discussion that is still moving gives your reply a chance of being read by the people taking part. A thread that has gone quiet gives it almost none, however good the reply is.

Does the author reach the people you want to reach? A post by someone whose audience overlaps with your buyers is worth more of your attention than a post by someone whose audience does not, however large their following.

When both answers are yes, a thoughtful reply is worth the effort. When both are no, move on.

    Where Engage Intel helps

Prospel's Engage Intel scans posts from accounts you follow on X, ranks them by reply opportunity and drafts replies for you to review. That gives you a shortlist to start from instead of a raw feed. It works on X. For conversations elsewhere you make the same judgement yourself, and the free Chrome extension adds Suggest Reply to X and LinkedIn, with nothing sent to Prospel until you click.

    Starting with a short experiment

You do not need a system to start. Try this.

    1. Look back over your recent replies. Which ones led to profile visits, conversations or follows? Note who they were with.
    2. List a handful of accounts your buyers follow. When one of them posts something you have a real view on, reply with something specific, not praise.
    3. After a couple of weeks, look at which replies led somewhere. The pattern in which accounts and which kinds of conversation worked will be clearer than any general advice.

Most founders never run this experiment because they are busy making perfect posts. They spend a long time writing and very little time joining conversations, and the return is lopsided as a result.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is activity the only signal worth checking before I reply?

No. Pair it with who the author reaches. A very active conversation among people who are nowhere near your market will not help you, and neither will a perfectly aimed post that nobody is reading.

    Where does Engage Intel help?

Engage Intel scans posts from accounts you follow on X, ranks them by reply opportunity and drafts replies for you to review. For conversations elsewhere, you make the same judgement yourself.

How do I know whether my replies are working?

Look for what follows them: profile visits, replies from the author, new connections and conversations. Judge by your own results over a few weeks, not by how many replies you posted.
